Are you a high school upperclassman getting college ready but don't know what to bring to your new dorm room? Are you watching countless "dorm haul" YouTube videos to get some inspiration for dorm decor? Look no further-- we have the ultimate dorm room tutorial you've been awaiting.
Follow these simple steps to make sure your dorm experience is 10/10.
1. Watch SOME dorm haul vids to get DIY inspo and decor ideas.
Notice that the word "some" is emphasized. Watching several videos might give you too many ideas and you're going to end up taking more than you need. As much as you think you need your own printer, just make a short trip to the library and take advantage of cheap (or even free) prints.
2. Start with the essentials.
You might be wondering, "what are essentials?" Well, things that you know you can't survive without. Toilet paper, toothpaste, deodorant, dry shampoo (definitely essential), a hairbrush, medicines, and your phone charger (let's be real), are just some of the things you won't be able to live without. Focus on getting items like these out of the way so you don't leave them behind.
3. Pick your color scheme.
You're going to want to have a color scheme in mind before doing any kind of decor shopping, or else your room is going to look like you did when you dressed yourself in kindergarten with a striped shirt and polka dotted shorts. Open up your Pinterest app to see color schemes that work. Choose your favorite. Go to Target and find decor that fits your selected color scheme.
4. Pick a couple decor items.
Target is undoubtedly the best place to go for all of your dorm related needs. Pick a few items to amp up your desk and give your dorm room a more "homey" feel. Don't overdo it. If you have too much decor, it will just look cluttered and messy. Avoid putting too many items in one place. Spread things out.
5. AVOID DECORATIVE PILLOWS.
As tempting as it may be to make your dorm room satisfy VSCO girl standards, don't do it. Those furry and frilly pillows are just going to end up on your floor at night. If you're involved on campus with clubs and activities, you will hardly spend time at your dorm anyway. You will go home to sleep, and moving those pillows out of your way and onto the floor limits your precious sleep time. Not to mention it takes way longer to make your bed in the morning.
6. Assemble your dorm room!
Now that you have all of the essentials along with a bit of decor, you are ready to put it all together! If you are in a dorm room that does not have a kitchen, make sure you have access to a microwave or other cooking sources. You may even want to get yourself a mini fridge. Just remember, less is more. You can always add more if you feel that it is underwhelming.
