Where is SUU? What is it known for? How many students attend the university? What is there to do on and around campus? What makes SUU different from other universities? What is the school mascot? If you have ever wondered the answer to any of these questions, keep reading.
Southern Utah University was founded in 1897. It is located in Cedar City, Utah. It now offers 145 undergraduate programs and 18 graduate and certificate programs. The student population, calculated in 2017, totals to 10,245 students. Traditions are a big thing here at SUU - one of them being the Bell Tower Tradition, where students walk from west to east under the Carter Carillon to start their college experience, and walk from east to west on graduation day four years later. This is something that sets SUU apart from other schools.
University of the Parks
SUU is also known as the University of the Parks, with 20 National Parks, Monuments, and Recreational areas within a five hour drive from campus. My personal favorite National Park (so far) is Zion. Something that sets SUU apart from other universities is the opportunity it allows students to study a "Semester in the Parks." This is typically a three month long program where students have the opportunity to receive college credit while living, working, and studying at Bryce Canyon National Park. This is not something offered by other institutions, which I think really makes SUU unique. SUU Outdoors allows for students to rent outdoor equipment so that everyone has the opportunity to explore what Southern Utah has to offer.
Arts and Culture
Cedar City is also known as, "Festival City USA" and is the home for the Utah Shakespeare Festival. The arts program is something that SUU is known for because of the Shakespeare reputation that it has. Also located on campus, is the Southern Utah Museum of Art. Here, artwork from local and global artists are on display. I have actually never been to the SUMA yet, but I am excited to check it out!
Athletics
SUU is a part of the Big Sky Conference in Division 1 of the NCAA. Our school offers a wide range of sports teams, and our Thunder Crew helps cheer them on to victory. Thor is our mascot here at SUU and we are proud to be part of #TBirdNation!
